Legend has it, GI's in post WWII Yokosuka, Japan, would bring their bomber jackets into the Toyo Tailor shop for "souvenir" hand embroidery - turning their jackets into something special to bring home. The style caught on and they were soon being made of surplus parachute nylon & silk. The tradition continued through the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where the darker sides of the conflicts were often mirrored in the design motifs.
The Ampal Creative and The Badweather share Southern California roots and both were created in Los Angeles. They each spent about a decade in LA, before heading North and South respectively. This pack, a long time in the making, became souvenirs - an ode to the goodtimes and the bad, spent in the City of Angels and found in both creator's DNAs. The materials and embroidery were directly referenced from The Badweather's personal collection of Korean and Vietnam era jackets.

In 2020 we decided to develop 2 signature custom sweatbands for use on all Ampal hats - a Navy Premium Chino Twill and a Dk. Brown 3M Tech option. The Premium sweatband is soft 100% cotton Chino Twill with a special blend of layers for comfort and a vinyl sweat barrier layer. We first developed the 3M Tech sweatband in 2013 but only used it intermittently. It's soft, ultra breathable and moisture wicking, and now upgraded with a sweat barrier to keep the exterior of the hat looking clean.
