Frothin’

The continued warm spell, following 2+ weeks of swell, has me thinking about waves.

Anyone who has whomped or surfed shorebreak knows it can be brutal, which might make you wonder who would stand tall in the pit to get the shot. Clark is an amazing waterman and big wave hellman, like his brother, Brock. This is Clark pulling into massive Waimea shore break.

20,000 LEAGUES one

I have been a big fan of Insight’s award winning marketing campaigns, especially the Dopamine I&II collections which to me are really more art than ad. I wish my magazines were filled with more ads like these.

Definitely amazing work by Dustin Humphries, so you can understand my excitement when I discovered Bruce Mozert on my friend/webguy’s blog jacobheftmann.com. He made the first underwater camera housing while on the set of Tarzan 3, in 1938, and captured these amazing images from the 40’s through the 70’s.

Look out for part two, more from jh, and some looks from the North Shore…
& the ladies that intrigue us…
A behind the scenes look at our “girls that intrigue us” lookbook shoot. We didn’t want to use models, but instead chose a few of our friends who are also involved in fashion. Mallyce, Michelle and Natalia have all developed their own unique style and also are involved on the ground level of clothes and fashion today. Michelle is the production manager for Pastelle, Ransom, and Diamond Supply Co.’s apparel. Natalia has her own jewelry line, n.om, which is killing it, and Mallyce designs and runs, the high end fashion line LAEKEN.
Grunge

A few selections from Michael Levine’s new book “Grunge.” Sub Pop’s label photographer- late 80’s to early 90’s – enough said.

Legendary
Bunker Spreckels
I don’t think the movie ever got made, but Taschen did put out “Bunker Spreckels: Surfings Divine Prince of Decadence.” Described as -
“The wild, brief life of a surfing legend and international playboy
“The tale of Bunker Spreckels (1949–1977) reads like a pitch for a movie to rival Boogie Nights: the stepson of Clark Gable is a privileged Los Angeles party boy who is heir to a multimillion dollar fortune; passionate about surfing, martial arts, guns, and women, he lives the life of a debauched international jet-setter before succumbing to his excesses at the tender age of 27.
“Born Adolph B. Spreckels III, heir to the Spreckels sugar fortune, Bunker became a famous surfer as a teenager, but after his inheritance came along, he began to slip into a life of pomp and excess where surfing took a back seat to drugs, sex, and wild road trips. So remarkable was his lifestyle that he created an alter-ego who invited photographers and documentarists to trail him, piecing together a tell-all epic of his own rise to fame and fortune. Before the project, known as “The Player”, could be completed, Spreckels suddenly died of “natural causes.””
From master surf photographer Art Brewer and writer/photojournalist C.R. Stecyk III.
